Certificate
Most principal diamonds will come with a certificate. A certificate is a grading report generated by an independent laboratory which states what that diamond is (weight, color, clarity, proportions, plot of the imperfections, etc.)

There are a number of laboratories grading diamonds today, and it is crucial to pay attention to which lab graded the diamond you are considering, as it can greatly affect the value of the diamond.

GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is widely considered the most reputable of the labs grading diamonds today, and it is their grading reports that you will find at most fine jewelers. GIA is a nonprofit educational institution which invented the scales that are used to grade diamonds and they train and certify all of the gemologists in the world. Their grading report is the standard by which all others are judged- they are the strictest and most consistent diamond graders in the world.

There are a number of other laboratories that also grade diamonds. Make sure you understand the differences in the grading reports before you settle for a diamond graded by a different laboratory.

There is a lot to learn about diamonds before deciding what is right for you. Call us to set up an appointment with one of our gemologists. You can typically expect to spend about an hour when you come in to discuss diamond basics and to look at diamonds in different sizes, shapes, and qualities.
